Could abdominal itching be a sign of uremia?
Abdominal itching is not necessarily a sign of uremia, as there are many reasons that can cause it, including intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, contact dermatitis, folliculitis, and eczema. If the abdominal itching is caused by a disease, it may be a sign of uremia.
Reasons for Abdominal Itching:
1. Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy: It is a unique complication in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, caused by a significant increase in endogenous hormones produced by the placenta during pregnancy, leading to disorders in bilirubin excretion. Common symptoms of this disease include skin itching and jaundice, resulting in abdominal itching. It is recommended that pregnant women seek medical attention promptly and undergo treatment after a clear diagnosis;
2. Contact Dermatitis: It is an inflammatory skin disease caused by skin contact with exogenous substances and can occur anywhere on the body. If the abdomen comes into contact with allergens, symptoms such as itching, erythema, and papules may appear. This is not a sign of uremia;
3. Folliculitis: It is a suppurative inflammation caused by bacterial infection of hair follicles. Common symptoms of this disease include red, solid papules, pustules, and surrounding erythema on the skin, accompanied by itching. This is also not a sign of uremia;
4. Eczema: It is an inflammation of the superficial dermis and epidermis caused by various internal and external factors. Clinically, skin lesions in the acute phase are mainly papulovesicles with a tendency to exudate, while those in the chronic phase are mainly mossy changes and prone to recurrence. If eczema occurs on the abdomen, it will cause abdominal itching, which is a sign of uremia. It is recommended that patients seek medical attention promptly, undergo various examinations to make a clear diagnosis, and follow the doctor's advice for treatment. If abdominal itching is caused by a disease, the underlying disease should be actively treated to alleviate the symptoms of abdominal itching from the source.
