When is the Best Time to Have a Medical Abortion?
Many women fail to take proper contraceptive measures during sexual activity, resulting in unintended pregnancies. If they do not want to keep the child and it is confirmed after examination that it is not an ectopic pregnancy, they can terminate the pregnancy through medical abortion or surgical abortion. Some women fear surgical abortion, so they choose medical abortion, but they are unaware of some important considerations. Let's understand when is the best time for medical abortion.
The optimal time for medical abortion is within 7 weeks (or 49 days) of pregnancy (calculated from the beginning of the last menstrual period). If this period is exceeded, it is recommended to opt for surgical abortion instead.
Medical abortion typically involves taking two types of medication. First, a drug that inhibits embryonic development is administered. Two to three days later, a drug that contracts the uterus is taken to expel the embryo. Most people will experience uterine contractions and abdominal pain within two hours after taking the latter medication. Generally, patients are observed in the hospital for six hours after taking the medication and can then return home. Bleeding may persist for 1-2 weeks afterwards.
After the bleeding stops, a follow-up ultrasound examination can be performed to check if the abortion is complete.
1. Observe vaginal bleeding: After taking the medication for medical abortion, pay attention to any tissue expelled. If there is any, it should be identified by a doctor. If vaginal bleeding exceeds twice the normal menstrual flow, immediate medical attention should be sought, and close observation and appropriate treatment by a gynecologist should be arranged.
2. Pay attention to care: Some women may experience mild nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, and lower abdominal pain after taking the medication for medical abortion. Individual cases may develop a rash, but generally no treatment is required.
3. Maintain hygiene: After medical abortion, it is recommended to rest for two weeks, avoid fatigue or strenuous exercise, and keep the vagina clean. Bathing in a tub is not advisable for two weeks after the procedure. Sexual activity should be avoided for one month. Additionally, aspirin, indomethacin, and other analgesics should not be taken simultaneously with the medication for medical abortion.
4. Regular follow-up: Those who undergo medical abortion should return to the hospital for follow-up examinations on the 8th, 15th, and 43rd days after taking the medication to assess recovery.
It is important to note that both medical and surgical abortions can have certain adverse effects on women's health. Therefore, it is crucial for women to take care of their bodies and avoid serious consequences resulting from momentary pleasure. Repeated abortions can lead to infertility, so it is essential to be aware of this risk. Finally, it is strongly recommended to undergo medical abortion at a reputable hospital and not to self-medicate without proper guidance.
