Dermabrasion
In dermabrasion, a coolant is applied to acne scars to numb the skin and stabilize its surface. Then, a small industrial diamond rotates a stainless steel wheel to polish the scar edges and bottom, with added emphasis on the center to flatten depressed scars. This method is highly suitable for treating acne scars that are depressed. However, if the treated skin is exposed to sunlight, it may darken, so special attention should be paid to sun protection.
Collagen Injection
Before using collagen injection to treat acne scars, a brief examination should be conducted to determine if you are suitable for this method. Pull the skin next to the scar with your hand. If the scar disappears, you are likely suitable for this treatment. Collagen injection involves injecting collagen, which is naturally produced by the skin's dermis. Another round of treatment may be necessary after 3-9 months, as the body gradually dissolves the collagen. Notably, pregnant or lactating women should exercise caution as the safety of collagen injection for scar treatment in these populations is not fully established.
Fat Injection
Fat injection is primarily used for treating deep scars caused by fat loss. In this procedure, fat is extracted from another part of the body, cleaned, and then injected into the scar for treatment. The effects typically last for six months to a year.
Chemical Peels
For pitted scars, the primary treatment involves using trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or alpha-hydroxy acids for mild to superficial peeling. For severe acne scars, phenol peels under general anesthesia may be necessary.
Punch Excision
This method effectively treats narrow, deep scars resembling ice pick scars. A circular punch cutter is used to excise the acne scar, and the edges are sutured closed.
Laser Dermabrasion
Laser dermabrasion differs from traditional dermabrasion in that it uses a carbon dioxide laser to polish the skin, minimizing bleeding. However, improper use can result in new scars or pigmentation.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy for Acne Scars
IPL therapy utilizes intense pulsed light to induce photochemical effects on the skin, causing chemical changes in the internal molecular structure of dermal collagen and elastic fibers, restoring their original elasticity. Additionally, its photothermal action enhances vascular function and improves circulation, achieving the effects of wrinkle reduction and pore minimization. Before treatment, a cooling gel is applied to the target area. The practitioner wears dark glasses to protect their eyes from the intense light. During treatment, the IPL device's treatment head is placed on the skin, and pulses of light are released. Patients may feel a slight pinching sensation, akin to a gently snapped rubber band on the skin. While a mild anesthetic may be used, it is generally not necessary. IPL therapy for acne scars is a non-ablative, dynamic treatment method that is safe and does not harm the skin.
