What Causes Pain in the Lower Gum?

There are many possible reasons for pain in the lower gum, such as periapical periodontitis and pulpitis. It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly.

1. Periapical Periodontitis: The acute or chronic inflammation of the tissues surrounding the apex of a tooth root is known as periapical periodontitis. The causes of periapical periodontitis are numerous, primarily due to bacterial infections in the pulp cavity spreading through the apical foramen to the surrounding tissues of the tooth apex. Patients may experience spontaneous pain and pain upon biting. If pain occurs in the lower teeth during biting, it may lead to pain in the lower gum. Treatments include pulp opening and drainage, as well as root canal therapy.

2. Pulpitis: Pulpitis refers to inflammatory lesions occurring in the pulp tissue. Dental hard tissue diseases such as deep caries and wedge-shaped defects, if not controlled and treated effectively and timely, can lead to pulpitis. Patients may suddenly experience severe pain without any external stimulus. The pain has a process of persistence and relief. If pain occurs in the lower teeth, it may cause pain in the lower gum. Root canal therapy is primarily used for treatment.
