How to Treat a Sprain?

A sprain typically refers to an ankle sprain, and the treatment methods for ankle sprains include physiotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and surgical treatment.

  1. Physiotherapy: Ankle sprain is a common athletic shoe injury that can cause soft tissue damage around the ankle joint, leading to symptoms such as local pain, swelling, joint mobility impairment, gait disturbance, and subcutaneous bruising within a short period. Immediate stopping of activity and physiotherapy, such as skilled reduction therapy and ice compression therapy, are required for ankle sprains. During the remission phase of ankle sprains, physiotherapy such as skilled massage, hot compression therapy, thermotherapy, and infrared radiation therapy can be performed.

  2. Pharmacotherapy: Ankle sprains can cause severe pain and swelling. If symptoms are intolerable, topical medications can provide relief, such as Yunnan Baiyao aerosol and diclofenac diethylamine乳胶剂. When necessary, oral non-steroidal analgesics and traditional Chinese medicine that promote blood circulation and eliminate blood stasis, such as ibuprofen sustained-release capsules and blood circulation-promoting and pain-relieving capsules, can also be taken.

  3. Surgical Treatment: Ankle sprains may result in severe ligament and tendon tear injuries. If the ligaments and tendons are completely torn, most cases require surgical suturing, followed by local external fixation and immobilization therapy. The severity of ankle sprains varies, and treatment plans differ accordingly. Since the severity of the injury cannot be judged by symptoms, medical attention should be sought as soon as possible after an ankle sprain to complete examinations and select an appropriate treatment plan based on the doctor's advice.

During the treatment of ankle sprains, it is advisable to consume foods rich in protein and minerals, such as poultry, lean meat, green vegetables, and root vegetables.
