What Dietary Considerations Should Be Taken for Hypothyroidism?
There are five items in thyroid function examination, among which TPOAb, TgAb and TRAb do not need to avoid iodine if they are negative; if TPOAb, TgAb and TRAb are positive, they need to avoid iodine.
Patients with hypothyroidism lack thyroid hormones, and their lipid metabolism rate decreases, which is prone to abnormal fat metabolism, thus causing hyperlipidemia and further causing coronary heart disease. Therefore, hypothyroid patients need to reduce the intake of cholesterol and trans-fatty acids, such as animal viscera, fatty meat, egg yolk, squid, etc.
If hypothyroidism is not controlled for a long time, body metabolism will slow down, and bone metabolism will also slow down accordingly, which may lead to osteoporosis. Therefore, hypothyroid patients should control the intake of foods that easily cause osteoporosis, such as coffee, strong tea, carbonated drinks, and increase the intake of calcium-rich milk and dairy products.
Hypothyroidism leads to a slowdown in body metabolism, reducing blood flow through the kidneys and subsequently decreasing the kidneys' excretion ability. As a result, uric acid in the blood cannot be excreted, leading to hyperuricemia. Therefore, hypothyroid patients should avoid drinking alcohol, especially beer.
Hypothyroid patients have multiple antibodies in their bodies that deposit in the kidneys and damage kidney function. Coupled with a slowdown in body metabolism and reduced blood flow through the kidneys, kidney function decreases. Therefore, hypothyroid patients should maintain a bland diet. It is recommended to control daily salt intake to less than 5 grams.
