What does nipple inversion mean?

Inverted Nipple

Inverted nipple refers to the nipple that is not protruding but recessed inward. Due to different physical conditions and different causes of nipple recession, the degree of nipple recession varies, which determines whether the nipple can be pulled out and restored to normal. For severe nipple recession, it is almost impossible to be corrected. Because of the nipple recession, there may be secretions or unpleasant odor, so attention should be paid to nipple care.

Causes of Nipple Recession

1. The occurrence of inverted nipple is generally caused by congenital development, including shortened mammary ducts, fibrotic contracture of some tissues, and poor development of nipple smooth muscle. Among them, shortened mammary ducts and fibrotic contracture of tissues are the main causes of inverted nipple.

2. Secondary inverted nipple (acquired inverted nipple) is caused by traction of pathological tissues in the breast, bra compression, or tight binding. It is often seen in diseases such as inflammation and tumors, which invade the ducts, ligaments, and fascia of the breast, causing them to contract. Unreasonable tight binding or wearing too tight bras during adolescence can also lead to nipple recession due to poor blood circulation and poor breast development.

How to Prevent Nipple Recession

If nipple recession is congenital, it is recommended to manually pull the nipple every day when the breast begins to develop, so that the nipple can be elongated. Generally speaking, this method can effectively correct mild to moderate nipple recession. For severe nipple recession, it can also play a certain role in alleviation. For nipple recession caused by secondary reasons, it is necessary to actively treat the primary disease, remove the causes of nipple recession as soon as possible, and create conditions for surgical treatment.
