If a baby's runny nose persists for half a month without improvement, it is necessary to visit the hospital promptly to identify the cause. The symptoms of a runny nose can be relieved through hot compresses, facial steaming with a steamer, and nasal aspiration with a nasal aspirator. Reasons for a baby's runny nose include:
1. Cold-induced rhinorrhea. Rhinitis caused by a cold is known as acute rhinitis, during which the nasal mucosa becomes inflamed and swollen, and glandular secretions increase to form mucus. Initially, the mucus is clear, but after 3-5 days, it gradually turns into a thicker, yellowish discharge, and eventually resolves.
2. Allergic rhinitis. This is characterized by a constant clear nasal discharge accompanied by nasal congestion, nasal itchiness, and sneezing, especially in the morning after waking up. If the baby experiences frequent sneezing and a constant flow of clear nasal discharge after waking up from a warm bed, it is advisable to be vigilant about whether the baby may have allergic rhinitis. The presence of rhinorrhea along with bronchial asthma further increases the likelihood of allergic rhinitis.
3. Foreign bodies in the nasal cavity. If one side of the baby's nose emits a foul odor, discharges pus, and sometimes contains bloodstains, it is necessary to consider whether there are foreign bodies in the nasal cavity. This situation often occurs in children around 3 years of age, who may curiously insert paper, beans, or other objects into their noses while playing. If these objects cannot be retrieved, they can cause a foul odor. However, small metal parts or buttons may not necessarily produce a foul odor when inserted into the nasal cavity.
Methods to relieve a baby's runny nose include:
1. Hot compresses: Apply a warm, damp cloth to the baby's nose. As the nasal mucosa contracts with heat, the nasal cavity becomes more open, and viscous mucus is more easily liquefied and expelled. When applying the hot compress, ensure gentle movements. If nasal mucus is present in the nostrils, it can be cleaned with a cotton swab dipped in water. Gentle massage of the nose or the sides of the nostrils can also be helpful.
2. Facial steamer: Use a facial steamer to expose the baby's face to moisture and heat. The steam can moisturize the nasal cavity and help expel excess mucus quickly and naturally. When using the steamer, keep it at a safe distance from the baby to avoid injuring their delicate skin. The recommended usage time is approximately 3 minutes.
3. Nasal aspirator: When the baby has a lot of nasal secretions or a prominent nasal tone, a nasal aspirator can be used. When aspirating one nostril, it is advisable to press the other nostril to enhance the effect. Additionally, the nasal aspirator can remove a large amount of mucus and secretions at once. Before use, parents should check the baby's nasal cavity for nasal mucus and maintain gentle movements to avoid causing pain or injury by inserting the aspirator too deeply. After use, the aspirator should be cleaned thoroughly.
