Can pregnancy occur during menstruation?
The menstrual cycle is commonly referred to as the period. Firstly, it must be emphasized that sexual intercourse during menstruation is not advisable as it can easily lead to infections. The likelihood of pregnancy during menstruation is relatively low, but it cannot be completely ruled out. This primarily depends on whether the woman's menstrual cycle is regular and whether effective contraceptive measures are taken.
1. Most Cases of Non-Pregnancy: Under normal circumstances, menstruation occurs approximately two weeks after ovulation, and an egg can only survive for 1 to 2 days in the body. Once the egg dies, it cannot be fertilized. During menstruation, the egg has already died, so even if sperm enters the body during intercourse, it cannot form a fertilized egg, making pregnancy unlikely in most cases.
2. Few Cases of Pregnancy: Some women have irregular menstrual cycles and may ovulate during menstruation or shortly after it ends. Sperm can survive for 2 to 3 days in the body. If sexual intercourse occurs during menstruation without contraception and ovulation happens before the sperm dies, fertilization may occur, leading to the formation of a fertilized egg and possibly pregnancy. Although this scenario is rare, it cannot be entirely excluded.
In addition to the possibility of pregnancy, sexual intercourse during menstruation can easily lead to pelvic infections, urinary tract infections, and endometriosis. Therefore, sexual intercourse during menstruation is prohibited. If discomfort arises due to sexual intercourse during menstruation, seek medical attention from the obstetrics and gynecology department promptly.
