"What Are the Correct Emergency Steps to Take When You Sprain Your Ankle and It Hurts?"

Update Date: Source: Network

It is quite common for people to sprain their ankles in daily life, leading to pain and swelling. Here's what you should do: Firstly and most importantly, stop all activities immediately. Apply ice packs for cold compression, and seek medical attention promptly if the condition is severe.

Steps to Take After Spraining an Ankle

1. Immediately stop walking, exercising, or any other physical activities. Sit or lie down, and elevate the injured foot using pillows, bedding, clothing, backpacks, etc., to facilitate venous return, thereby reducing swelling and pain.

2. Immediately apply ice packs or cold towels to the affected area to constrict blood vessels, reducing bleeding or exudation, and thereby alleviating swelling and pain.

3. While or after applying cold compression, use bandages, triangular bandages, or other fabrics to apply pressure and wrap the area around the ankle joint. Alternatively, use several wide adhesive tapes to attach and immobilize the ankle joint from the sole of the foot to the ankle and dorsal side, reducing mobility. Regardless of the method used, ensure that the injured lateral malleolus is in valgus position or the injured medial malleolus in varus position, to reduce traction on the injured collateral ligaments or muscles, thereby mitigating or preventing further injury.

4. If a fracture has occurred or is suspected, place two wooden boards or cardboard sheets, approximately 30cm in length, on both the internal and external sides of the injured area. Add cotton pads, towels, or clothing to the injured area, and then use bandages or triangular bandages to secure the two boards in place. For open fractures, apply pressure dressing for hemostasis before immobilizing the fracture site.

5. Avoid rubbing or massaging the injured area after the injury. Avoid applying heat immediately; heat therapy should commence 24 hours after the injury.

6. It is best to transport the injured person to the hospital for further diagnosis and treatment using a stretcher. If necessary, dial the emergency number 120 to request professional emergency responders for further assistance.
