Most individuals opt for silicone implants during rhinoplasty procedures as, in case of a failed surgery, the implant can be removed, restoring the nasal bridge to its original state. Rhinoplasty, being a surgical procedure, carries inherent risks, and some patients may experience deformities or swelling post-surgery, necessitating implant removal surgery.
Nasal Implant Removal Procedure
Nasal implant removal involves extracting the implant and performing necessary repairs. After removal, the nose can fully revert to its pre-surgery condition. This process is termed nasal implant removal surgery, addressing issues such as swelling, deformation, or post-operative complications caused by the nasal augmentation.
Prior to the surgery, routine nasal examinations and proper cleansing are essential. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, with an incision made along the inner rim of the nostril to access and remove the implant. Following implant extraction, the area is rinsed with saline solution, and the incision is then sutured. The entire process takes approximately ten to fifteen minutes, causing minimal pain. Full recovery, with no external scarring, occurs within 3-5 days, allowing for the optional redesign and re-implantation of a new nasal implant based on patient preference.
Post-Operative Care
- Rest in a semi-reclined position to promote blood circulation. Avoid bending your head the first day to prevent bleeding. Consume liquids for the first two to three days, avoiding spicy or irritating foods.
- Bleeding at the incision site will cease within three hours post-surgery. If blood clots form, gently wash them off with 3% hydrogen peroxide, followed by saline solution, and apply a small amount of ointment or antibacterial powder to keep the area dry. Sutures are removed after 5-7 days.
- Swelling will commence 1-2 hours after surgery, peaking at around 24 hours, subsiding after 48 hours, and gradually decreasing over 72 hours.
- Apply an antibiotic ointment to the incision site, leaving it exposed without bandaging. Light bleeding is normal; gently dab it away with a sterile cotton swab. Avoid contact with unclean objects to prevent infection.
Recovery Period
The recovery period for nasal implant removal typically ranges from 3 to 6 months, though it varies depending on individual constitution and post-operative care. After implant removal, the nose may initially appear flatter due to prolonged pressure on the cartilage, but this will naturally resolve within two to three months.
