"When is the Best Time to Have a Sex Hormone Panel Test?"
For women, it is generally recommended to undergo the Sex Hormone Six Tests on the second to fourth day after the onset of menstruation, preferably with an empty stomach in the morning. This period falls within the early follicular phase, which can reflect the basal functional status of the ovaries.
However, there are also women who have not menstruated for a long time. How should we advise them to take the test? In cases of amenorrhea, if a color Doppler ultrasound examination reveals that the endometrial thickness is less than 5mm, it also essentially reflects the basal hormone level of the ovaries. Therefore, we can randomly draw blood samples at this time, meaning any morning on an empty stomach is suitable.
It is crucial to avoid drawing blood after administering progesterone and waiting for menstruation to resume. This is because progesterone can have a feedback inhibitory effect on the hypothalamus-pituitary axis, potentially leading to false readings in the Sex Hormone Six Tests, even showing normal results. Such findings would not be conducive to accurate disease diagnosis.
For women with prolonged amenorrhea or who have not menstruated for a long time, a random selection of time for the Sex Hormone Six Tests on an empty stomach is appropriate. In contrast, for women with a normal menstrual cycle, the optimal time for blood drawing is typically on the second to fourth day of the menstrual cycle, on an empty stomach in the morning.
