How to Treat Cretinism?
Cretinism is also known as congenital hypothyroidism. Once diagnosed, thyroid hormone replacement therapy should be initiated immediately, mainly with oral administration of Eltroxin tablets. The initial dosage is usually 6-15ug/kg/day, and subsequent thyroid function tests should be performed multiple times to adjust medication based on the results.
Children under one year old should undergo follow-up visits every 2-3 months, children aged 2-3 years should have follow-up visits every 3-4 months, and most children over three years old should have follow-up visits every six months. During the follow-up period, monthly follow-up visits should be conducted after medication adjustments, and in addition to thyroid function tests, intelligence tests should be performed every 3-6 months. When there is a sign of intellectual disability, targeted early rehabilitation interventions should be provided.
After being diagnosed, it is crucial to strengthen dietary recuperation, focusing on nutritious and easily digestible foods, and paying attention to regular meals and quantities. Regular massage can be used to exercise muscle strength, promote blood circulation and muscle activity, which is beneficial for the recovery of the five soft tissues.
