"Struggling with Bitter Pills? Tips for Taking Difficult-to-Swallow Medications?"
Methods to Alleviate the Bitter Taste of Chinese Herbal Medicine
I believe many of you have heard the saying that "good medicine tastes bitter but cures illness". Although the process of taking Chinese herbal medicine may be longer, its medicinal effects are still excellent, which is universally recognized. However, the bitter taste of Chinese herbal medicine decoction can be too strong for some people to swallow, making them feel like they are being tortured. In fact, if the taste of Chinese herbal medicine decoction is too bitter, there are some effective methods that can help you swallow it. So, what should you do if the medicine is too bitter to swallow? Here are some tips:
1. Control the Timing of Administration
Within a 24-hour period, there are two "golden periods" for the body to absorb medicine, one from 8 am to 10 am and the other from 2 pm to 3 pm. Bitter Chinese herbal medicine can be taken after meals during these times.
2. Control the Temperature of the Decoction
The serving of Chinese herbal medicine emphasizes the principle of "warm for cold, cold for hot". However, this principle may not apply to bitter Chinese herbal medicine. Studies have shown that the tongue is more sensitive to temperatures above 37°C. Therefore, the temperature of bitter Chinese herbal medicine decoction should be controlled between 15°C and 37°C, which can prevent scalding and correct the bitter taste.
3. Control the Position of Holding and Swallowing
Research has shown that human bitter taste receptors are mainly concentrated in the front half of the tongue, especially the tip. Therefore, after taking the medicine, it is best to quickly hold it at the base of the tongue and swallow naturally, or use a spoon to directly send the medicine to the base of the tongue and swallow smoothly.
4. Control the Speed of Administration
The longer the medicine stays in the mouth, the more bitter it feels. Therefore, it is important to take bitter Chinese herbal medicine quickly and cleanly.
5. Drink Moderate Amounts of Warm Water After Administration
This not only helps the gastrointestinal tract to absorb the medicine, but also alleviates the bitter taste of the medicine to a certain extent.
6. Add Flavorings
Honey, sugar, and other flavorings can be added to bitter Chinese herbal medicine. However, for herbs such as rhizoma coptidis and radix gentianae, it is recommended to use flavorings sparingly or not at all. If necessary, licorice and jujube can be added to harmonize the taste.
Medication Prohibitions
When taking medicine containing radix rehmanniae or radix polygoni multiflori, avoid scallions, garlic, and radishes; when taking mentha, avoid turtle meat; when taking poria cocos, avoid vinegar; when taking carapax trionycis, avoid amaranth; when taking purging agents such as da cheng qi tang or ma ren wan, avoid greasy and indigestible foods; when taking antiparasitic drugs, avoid greasy foods and take them on an empty stomach. Additionally, during illness and medication, all cold, sticky, or strongly stimulating foods should be avoided.
