Why Is My Scalp So Oily? What Can I Do About It?
The secretion of oil from sebaceous glands is a normal physiological phenomenon. However, everyone's hair type, surrounding environment, and dietary habits vary, leading to differences in the degree of oily hair. Often, excessive oiliness and dandruff are mutually reinforcing. There are two main types of dandruff: oil secreted by the scalp and excessive proliferation of fungi. Especially during adolescence, sebum secretion is relatively vigorous, and the scalp environment is slightly acidic, making it easier for fungi to proliferate, stimulating the scalp to secrete more oil, thus forming a vicious cycle. Excessive sebum mixed with dust, abnormal proliferation of keratinocytes, robust metabolism, unclean scalp, abuse of shampoo, frequent staying up late, excessive alcohol consumption, hormonal imbalances, and vitamin deficiencies can all stimulate the sebum secretion of the scalp, and the normal metabolism of the stratum corneum cells of the scalp may also become unstable.
1. How to choose shampoo: The oil secreted by the sebaceous glands is an acidic protective film with a usual PH value between 4.5 and 5.5, effectively protecting the hair and scalp. Therefore, for dry or neutral hair, a simple slightly acidic shampoo is sufficient. If the sebum secretion of the scalp is excessive, the scalp environment will be acidic, and a slightly alkaline shampoo can be used for neutralization and cleaning to achieve the purpose of cleansing and oil control.
2. Regular diet and lifestyle: Adjusting lifestyle habits is always mentioned, but due to vague concepts, many people don't know where to start. Diet is not as complicated as imagined; it can follow our usual meal plans. However, if you often have irregular eating habits, it is essential to establish a regular schedule. We often advise against spicy and greasy foods, but it doesn't mean avoiding them altogether; moderate consumption is generally fine. However, if your hair is excessively oily or you have severe dandruff issues, it is best to be mindful of your diet.
