What are the early symptoms of nearsightedness?
Myopia Symptoms and Prevention
In the early stages of myopia, symptoms such as blurred vision and visual fatigue are commonly observed. Myopia, a refractive error, primarily arises due to an excessively long anterior-posterior diameter of the eyeball or an overly curved cornea, causing parallel light rays from the outside world to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
Early Symptoms
Blurred Vision: Patients can see distant objects clearly but find nearby objects blurred. This occurs as the degree of myopia progresses, leading to a decline in the lens's ability to adjust.
Visual Fatigue: Prolonged visual activity causes the ciliary muscle to remain contracted, resulting in tension in the eye muscles and visual fatigue. This may be accompanied by discomforts like dizziness and headaches.
Late Symptoms
As myopia progresses, it may lead to strabismus (squint). High degrees of myopia weaken the binocular convergence function, potentially causing esophoria or exophoria. In severe cases, amblyopia (lazy eye) may develop. It is recommended that patients cultivate good eye care habits, avoiding prolonged close-up reading or staring at electronic devices, to prevent disruptions to daily life and work. Furthermore, maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamin-laden foods like carrots and blueberries can help supplement necessary nutrients for optimal eye health.
Should any significant discomfort arise, immediate medical attention is advised.
