How to Deal with Heatstroke in Summer

During summer, many people may experience symptoms of heatstroke due to high temperatures. Heatstroke can vary in severity. Minor heatstroke can be treated independently, but severe heatstroke requires different measures. Some people may be confused and unsure how to handle heatstroke, which can further exacerbate their discomfort. Therefore, it is important to learn how to deal with heatstroke effectively. Are there any good ways to address heatstroke?

1. Drinking Water: After sweating a lot, it is important to replenish water promptly. When engaging in outdoor activities, especially in high-temperature environments, it is crucial to ensure sufficient water intake. However, remember not to wait until you feel thirsty to drink water, as thirst already indicates that your body is dehydrated. Ideally, based on the temperature, drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day. If sweating excessively, consider adding some saltwater to compensate for the salt lost through sweating.

2. External Cooling: Quickly move away from high-temperature and high-humidity environments and transfer to a well-ventilated and shady area. Lay the patient flat and remove all clothing. Massage the skin and muscles to promote heat dissipation. For individuals without circulatory obstacles, apply ice-cold water or immerse the body in water at 27°C to 30°C for cooling. For those with circulatory obstacles, use evaporation cooling methods such as repeatedly wiping the skin with cool water and using a fan or air conditioning to accelerate evaporation.

3. Medication: Patients with heat cramps or heat exhaustion should be quickly transferred to a cool and well-ventilated area for rest or bed rest. Oral administration of cool saltwater or refreshing salty drinks is recommended. For individuals with circulatory failure, intravenous administration of physiological saline, glucose solution, and potassium chloride is necessary. Most patients can recover within 30 minutes to several hours after treatment. However, heatstroke can have severe prognoses with a mortality rate of 5% to 30%, thus immediate emergency measures should be taken.

4. Acupoint Relief Method: If heatstroke causes dizziness or fainting (including shock, coma, etc.), give the patient a cup of warm water (or sugared water) to drink and help them to a place with fresh air and shade. Massage the temples (preferably with essential oil). If the patient faints, stimulate the philtrum (the upper 1/3 of the nasolabial groove) with a fingernail.
