Update Date: Source: Network

The acupuncture point located in the depression below the tip of the medial malleolus is known as Zhaohai (KI6).

Zhaohai belongs to the Foot Shao Yin Kidney Meridian acupoints and is also one of the Eight Confluent Points. It is specifically situated on the medial side of the foot, one cun below the tip of the medial malleolus, in the depression at the lower margin of the medial malleolus. To locate this point, one should sit with the feet hanging down, push vertically downwards from the tip of the medial malleolus until reaching the depression at the lower margin, where there is a soreness or aching sensation upon pressure, indicating the location of Zhaohai.

In the superficial layer of Zhaohai, there is the medial cutaneous branch of the saphenous nerve; deep within, there is the tibial nerve trunk, and posterior-inferiorly, there are the posterior tibial artery and vein. Stimulating this point primarily has the effects of regulating Yin and calming the spirit, as well as regulating the two Yin channels. Clinically, it can be used to treat conditions such as irregular menstruation, red and white vaginal discharge, uterine prolapse, vaginal itching, frequent urination, urinary retention, constipation, epilepsy, insomnia, dry and sore throat, and more.

Stimulating Zhaohai nourishes the kidney and clears heat, regulates the three burners, and can promote the improvement of female endocrine and reproductive system functions, benefiting ovarian maintenance. Pressing and massaging Zhaohai with the thumb daily can treat insomnia, red and swollen eyes, frequent urination, and other conditions. Applying mild moxibustion with mugwort sticks to Zhaohai can improve symptoms such as frequent urination, red and white vaginal discharge, and irregular menstruation.

Clinically, Zhaohai is often used in combination with other acupuncture points for treating diseases. For instance, it can be paired with Hegu (LI4) and Lieque (LU7) to treat sore throat; paired with Zhongji (CV3) and Sanyinjiao (SP6) to treat irregular menstruation, menstrual cramps, and vaginal discharge; and paired with Zusanli (ST36) to treat beriberi. For related conditions, patients are advised to seek medical attention promptly and receive guidance from a doctor on stimulating Zhaohai.
