"Does Leukemia Increase Neutrophil Count?"
Neutrophils and Their Functions
Neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, are associated with cellular phagocytosis and digestive function. During bacterial infections, the neutrophil count elevates. Similarly, they rise in response to severe tissue damage, such as after major surgeries, severe traumas, or extensive burns, participating in the immune response. Neutrophils also increase when pathogens invade the body. In cases of acute infections and inflammations, including upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, appendicitis, cholecystitis, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections, elevated neutrophil counts may be observed.
Specific Conditions Associated with Elevated Neutrophil Counts
Upper Respiratory Infections
Conditions like pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and bronchitis may stimulate neutrophil proliferation due to pathogen exposure, resulting in high neutrophil counts.
Pneumonia
Types of pneumonia, such as lobar pneumonia and bronchopneumonia, can stimulate neutrophils to phagocytize pathogens in the alveoli and bronchial walls, leading to increased neutrophil levels.
Appendicitis
When appendicitis causes perforation and pus enters the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis, elevated neutrophil counts can be detected.
Cholecystitis
Caused by gallbladder obstruction or bacterial infections, cholecystitis triggers local inflammation, which can lead to high neutrophil levels.
Skin and Soft Tissue Infections
Conditions like folliculitis and furuncles stimulate neutrophil proliferation due to bacterial infections on the skin, resulting in increased neutrophil counts.
Urinary Tract Infections
Infections like cystitis occur due to pathogen growth and multiplication in the urinary tract. During diagnosis, both white blood cells and monocytes may increase, along with neutrophils.
Additionally, conditions such as acute myocardial infarction, tumors, and bone marrow proliferative disorders can also cause elevated neutrophil counts. If a test reveals high neutrophil levels, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly to identify the underlying cause and receive targeted treatment under a doctor's guidance.
