What Is Tumor Ablation?
Ablation therapy is a rapidly developing minimally invasive treatment for tumors in recent years. It utilizes imaging equipment such as CT and ultrasound for guidance. Then, one or more fine needles are inserted into the tumor, and chemical substances are injected into the tumor, or heating or freezing is performed to kill tumor cells. This causes necrosis and absorption of tumor tissue, achieving the effect of eliminating the tumor or reducing tumor burden. It is currently the primary method of local minimally invasive interventional therapy for tumors.
Tumor ablation methods can be divided into chemical ablation and physical ablation based on their different treatment principles. 1. Chemical Ablation: Chemical ablation involves injecting chemicals such as absolute alcohol and hydrochloric acid into the local tumor to cause chemical denaturation of the local tumor tissue, leading to tumor necrosis. 2. Physical Ablation: Physical ablation utilizes physical methods such as freezing or heating to act on the local tumor, causing destruction and breakdown of tumor cells. This ultimately leads to tumor necrosis and achieves the effect of eliminating the tumor. The main treatment methods of physical ablation include radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, laser ablation, and other thermal ablation methods. That is, the local tumor is heated to around 100°C to cause necrosis, while cryoablation freezes the tumor tissue to around -170°C to kill the tumor.
