Can a blood sugar watch actually measure blood glucose levels?
Current Blood Glucose Watches Do Not Offer Truly Non-Invasive Measurement
The blood glucose watches currently available on the market cannot truly measure blood glucose levels non-invasively. Many smartwatches on the market that claim to measure blood glucose do not actually provide direct measurements of blood glucose values. Major brands such as Huawei and Apple are actively researching non-invasive blood glucose detection technology, but have not yet fully realized this technology.
Huawei's WATCH4 series of watches utilizes big data analysis to assess the risk of high blood glucose, but it cannot directly measure blood glucose levels. These smartwatches collect data such as heart rate and blood oxygen levels, and combine them with user-inputted blood glucose values to estimate blood glucose levels. However, this method is not precise, especially during periods of significant blood glucose fluctuations.
The primary role of these watches is to assist users in monitoring health trends rather than providing accurate blood glucose data. For accurate blood glucose values, it is still necessary to undergo blood testing at a hospital.
Furthermore, the method of estimating blood glucose levels by collecting data like heart rate and blood oxygen, combined with user-inputted values, remains imprecise, especially during times of significant blood glucose fluctuations. These watches primarily serve to aid in monitoring health trends, not to provide precise blood glucose readings. For accurate blood glucose measurements, a hospital blood test is essential.
At present, smartwatches can only serve as auxiliary tools for health monitoring and cannot replace traditional blood glucose meters for accurate measurements. In cases of high blood glucose risk, it is recommended to use proper blood glucose meters and follow medical advice for treatment and management. For instance, doctors may prescribe insulin injections or oral hypoglycemic medications, with specific medication and dosage instructions to be followed under medical guidance.
