Western Medicine Local Treatment for Tongue Ulcers

The primary objectives of local treatment with Western medicine for tongue ulcers are to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and facilitate ulcer healing. Various treatment methods can be selected based on the condition:

1. Mouthwashes such as 0.25% chlortetracycline solution, 1:5000 Betadine solution, 1:5000 potassium permanganate solution, and 1:5000 furacilin solution.

2. Lozenges including Domiphen bromide lozenges, lysozyme lozenges, and chlorhexidine lozenges.

3. Powders such as Bingpengsan, Xisan, Qingdaisan, Yangyin Shengji San, and Huangliansan are primarily used in traditional Chinese medicine for oral ulcers. Compound betamethasone powder also has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and ulcer-healing effects.

4. Medicinal films containing antibiotics and corticosteroids. When using, dry the ulcer first, cut out a piece of film similar to the lesion area, and apply it to the ulcer. This can relieve pain, protect the ulcerated surface, and promote healing.

5. Analgesics such as 0.5% to 1% procaine solution, 0.5% to 1% dyclonine solution, and 0.5% to 1% dicaine solution are applied to the ulcer surface for temporary pain relief before eating, with two consecutive applications.

6. The cauterization method is suitable for patients with a small number of ulcers, small ulcer area, and long intervals. After surface anesthesia with 2% dicaine, wet and dry the ulcer surface, then use a small cotton ball dipped in 10% silver nitrate solution or 50% trichloroacetic acid or iodophenol solution and place it on the ulcer surface until it turns white. These medications precipitate proteins on the ulcer surface, forming a film to protect the ulcer and promote healing. During the procedure, be careful not to dip too much solution and avoid burning adjacent healthy tissue.
