Elevated AST in liver function tests refers to the increase in aspartate aminotransferase (AST), which is an important indicator in liver function tests. When it is elevated, it is associated with various liver diseases, such as hepatitis B, fatty liver, and alcoholic liver. However, it could also be attributed to lifestyle factors. Besides liver diseases, if AST increases temporarily, it may be related to respiratory tract infections or excessive fatigue.
1. What Does Elevated AST in Liver Function Tests Mean?
AST is a crucial test in liver function assessments. It is also known as aspartate aminotransferase and primarily exists in liver cells. If there is inflammation in the liver, resulting in liver cell necrosis, AST within the liver cells will be released into the blood, causing elevated AST levels. Based on the severity of the condition, liver-protecting medication may be prescribed. If the elevation is slight, it is recommended to rest well, avoid alcohol, and stay away from late nights. Liver function should be rechecked after two weeks to a month. If AST is significantly elevated, further testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis markers, and abdominal ultrasound is required to determine the cause of the elevated AST.

The normal range of AST is 0 to 40 U/L, and it is distributed in tissues such as the liver and skeletal muscles. When these tissues are damaged, cell membrane permeability increases, and AST is released into the serum, leading to an increase in serum enzyme concentration. AST is commonly used in liver function tests, and clinical hepatobiliary diseases often cause an increase in AST levels. However, in healthy individuals, AST levels may vary randomly depending on physical conditions, showing temporary or slight elevations, such as due to upper respiratory tract infections, excessive alcohol consumption, recent intake of fatty foods, intense exercise, or excessive fatigue.
