How to Breastfeed a Newborn in the Correct Position?
The correct breastfeeding positions for newborns mainly include cradling, crossover cradle, or supine holding. As a mother, if it is the first time giving birth and lacks experience in this aspect, it is essential to understand the correct feeding positions. Improper breastfeeding positions can easily lead to choking and accidents for babies. Here are the three positions:
Cradling Position
The mother sits on a chair or lies half on the bed, leaning against a soft cushion. Place a pad or pillow under the elbow and in the arms for support. Elevate the legs and bend the knees to feel more relaxed, which helps the mother relax her muscles and maintain a pleasant mood. Hold the baby in your arms, place the baby's head in your elbow, wrap your arm around the baby, and support the baby's buttocks. Ensure the baby's entire body relies on the mother's chest, with its height level with the mother's breasts.
Crossover Cradle Position
Holding the baby's arm is the opposite of the cradling position. If the baby's head lies on the right side of the mother's chest, use the left hand to support the baby's buttocks, and vice versa. The arm supports the baby's back, and the palm holds the baby's head. This position is more suitable for premature babies, making it easier for mothers to control the baby's small head.
Side-lying Position
This position is suitable for mothers who have undergone a cesarean section to avoid pressing on the wound. The mother lies on her side in bed, facing the baby. Then, rest her head on her arm, ensuring the baby's mouth is level with her nipple. Use the forearm of the other arm to support the baby's back and the hand to hold the baby's head. This method allows the mother to rest while the baby is breastfeeding, which is beneficial for postpartum recovery.
