What Are the Quick Methods to Relieve Hiccups?

Hiccups are actually a normal physiological phenomenon. Generally, many people hiccup after eating a full meal, and the frequency of hiccups is not very frequent. Once frequent hiccups occur, there are many tricks to quickly stop them. For example, drinking a sip of water and slowly swallowing it five to seven times in the mouth can basically stop the hiccups. Additionally, taking several deep breaths can also quickly stop hiccups.
Here are some methods to quickly stop hiccups:
- Deep Breathing: If hiccups occur during eating, pause eating and take several deep breaths, which often stops them in a short time.
- Acupressure: When hiccups are frequent, you can press the "Shaoshang" points on both sides with your fingers or ask someone else to do it for you. The "Shaoshang" points are located on the radial side of the base of the thumbnail, approximately 0.6cm from the nail edge, at the intersection of black and white flesh. - Massage: Take a thin stick, wrap one end with cotton (if no stick is available, you can use the thin end of a bamboo chopstick wrapped in cotton instead), place it in the patient's mouth, and use the soft end to massage a point in the middle of the anterior soft palate. This point is located slightly behind the junction of the hard and soft palates. Generally, massaging for 1 minute can effectively control hiccups.
- Drinking Water and Bending Over: Bend over to a 90-degree angle and take several large sips of warm water. Since the stomach is close to the diaphragm, it can warm the diaphragm internally. When bending over, the internal organs also massage the diaphragm, relieving diaphragm spasms and instantly stopping hiccups.
