How Harmful Is It for Babies to Have Imaging Tests?
Occasionally taking one or two radiographs for babies does not pose a significant harm. However, frequent radiography poses the greatest risk of radiation exposure, which may severely affect the child's development. Therefore, radiography is not recommended for babies unless necessary. Nevertheless, radiography is conducted to understand the baby's condition, and parents should not panic excessively.
Generally, if a baby undergoes radiography only once or twice with long intervals, there is little concern. However, if the baby undergoes multiple radiographs in a short period, the radiation exposure from the equipment can be significant. Since babies are in the growth stage, repeated exposure to physical elements of radiation may lead to severe developmental deformities.
If a baby's illness is not severe, such as simple coughing or fever, parents are advised not to agree to radiography. However, if there is a risk of the baby contracting pneumonia, parents should consent to radiography. Basically, radiography is performed to check if a baby has pneumonia, which is not complicated but involves a relatively high radiation dose.
If a baby needs radiography, parents must make adequate preparations. It is crucial not to hang any accessories on the baby's examination area, as it may interfere with the doctor's diagnosis. If there is uncertainty about whether radiography requires fasting, parents should clarify the instructions with the doctor.
