What Causes Infant Milk Overflow?

Pediatric expert Bao Xiulan believes that common causes of milk overflow include overfeeding (too frequent or too much milk), excessively large nipple apertures leading to fast milk flow, milk not fully covering the nipple in the bottle, swallowing air during feeding, and excessive change of posture during feeding. To address these issues, one can change the diaper before feeding, complete nursing procedures, and after milk consumption, hold the baby upright and pat their back to burp, allowing them to lie down on their right side.

What Should I Do When My Baby Overflows Milk?

Firstly, after feeding, avoid immediately laying the baby down. Instead, hold the newborn upright and gently pat their back to release any swallowed air, indicated by a burping sound. Secondly, when putting the baby to sleep after each feeding, elevate their upper body as much as possible to reduce the risk of milk overflow. Additionally, place the baby on their side when sleeping after milk consumption to prevent accidental milk aspiration into the respiratory tract and potential suffocation. To prevent the baby's head and face from tilting while sleeping, alternate sides (right side after one feeding, left side after the next) for better positioning than supine. Lastly, if the baby aspirates milk, parents should immediately tilt the baby's head downwards, pat their back, and encourage coughing to expel the milk. Observe carefully for signs of lethargy or distress, and seek immediate medical attention if necessary.
