Abscess of the Eyelid

Abscess of the eyelid, commonly referred to as hordeolum, is a prevalent ocular ailment. It frequently stems from inadequate eye hygiene practices, including rubbing the eyes frequently with unclean hands. Hordeolum not only jeopardizes ocular health but also impacts personal appearance, necessitating prompt interventions like warm compresses, diluted salt water cleansing, eyedrop application, and incision and drainage. Additionally, ensuring adequate eye rest, refraining from late-night activities, fostering healthy habits, and adhering to a bland diet are vital.

1. Wet Heat Compress

In the initial stages of hordeolum, a clean towel or gauze soaked in warm water can be gently applied to the affected area for 3-4 times daily, each session lasting 15-20 minutes. This method effectively facilitates the absorption of local inflammation, thereby alleviating symptoms.

2. Wiping with Diluted Salt Water

For early-stage hordeolum, dissolve salt in boiling water and, once cooled, use a sterile medical cotton swab dipped in the solution to gently cleanse the affected area several times a day. This aids in reducing inflammation and exhibits antibacterial properties.

3. Eyedrop Application

Consider administering antibiotic eyedrops or ointments, such as erythromycin eye ointment, 3-5 times daily. In cases of severe pain, intense redness and swelling, or fever, immediately consult a medical professional and adhere to their prescribed oral or injectable antibiotics.

4. Incision and Drainage

Both internal and external hordeolum should avoid premature squeezing or incision for drainage to prevent the spread of inflammation or complications like cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis or orbital cellulitis. If an abscess forms, hospitalization for incision and drainage is advisable. Even if the abscess ruptures naturally, consulting a doctor for thorough drainage is recommended to prevent incomplete drainage, persistent non-healing, scarring, or induration.

While multiple treatment options exist for hordeolum, selecting the appropriate approach based on individual circumstances and refraining from self-medication are crucial. Given its tendency for recurrence, maintaining good eye hygiene, avoiding excessive eye strain, and remaining vigilant even after successful treatment are essential practices.
