Can I drink alcohol after taking Omeprazole for 5 hours?
It is not recommended to drink alcohol when taking omeprazole. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that inhibits gastric acid secretion by acting on the sodium-potassium ATP pump of the stomach. The main component of alcohol is ethanol, which stimulates the stomach to secrete gastric acid. Consuming alcohol while inhibiting gastric acid secretion can negate the treatment effect of omeprazole.
Omeprazole can inhibit gastric acid, but drinking alcohol can affect its treatment effect. Clinically, omeprazole is mainly used for patients with gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and gastritis. Patients who use omeprazole may have gastric diseases. If patients consume alcohol during the use of omeprazole, alcohol may damage the gastric mucosa and affect the treatment effect of omeprazole. Therefore, it is not recommended for patients to drink alcohol.
Consuming alcohol during medication may increase the burden on the liver. As omeprazole is almost completely metabolized by the liver, and alcohol also undergoes liver metabolism and kidney excretion, it is not recommended for patients to consume alcohol while using omeprazole, considering the aspect of drug metabolism.
