"What is the Normal Range for TSH During Pregnancy?"
Normal Range of TSH During Pregnancy
The normal ranges of TSH during pregnancy are as follows:
Early Pregnancy: Normal range is 0.1 to 2.50 mIU/L;
Mid-Pregnancy: Normal range is 0.2 to 3.0 mIU/L;
Late Pregnancy: Normal range is 0.3 to 3.0 mIU/L.
TSH stands for serum thyrotropin, and its purpose is to assess whether thyroid function is abnormal during pregnancy, enabling timely treatment upon detection of any issues. If TSH levels exceed the upper limit for the corresponding trimester, a comprehensive analysis in conjunction with FT4 (free thyroxine) levels can lead to a diagnosis of subclinical hypothyroidism, which may cause fetal miscarriage, congenital defects, among other complications. In such cases, levothyroxine sodium can be prescribed, and follow-up tests are crucial for adjusting medication dosage accordingly.
If TSH levels are low, it may indicate transient hyperthyroidism due to elevated hCG levels during early pregnancy. Generally, no medication is required, and a follow-up check around the 20th week of pregnancy will reveal that most cases return to normal.
