Anal Canal Ventilation in Rectal Obstruction

Rectal obstruction occurs frequently among diseases of the anus and rectum. When the body is troubled by rectal obstruction, anal canal ventilation is required to evacuate the gas inside the anal canal. Acute intestinal obstruction progresses rapidly and often leads to patient death, thus anal canal ventilation is crucial. After applying a lubricant to the anal canal, the tube is inserted into the rectum and fixed, allowing the expulsion of gas from the rectum.

What is Anal Canal Ventilation?

Anal canal ventilation refers to a method used to eliminate intestinal gas accumulation and alleviate abdominal distension. The procedure is straightforward; after coating the anal canal with a lubricant, the tube is inserted slowly into the rectum through the anus, followed by fixation or removal of the tube. However, appropriate treatment measures should be taken based on the patient's specific condition.

Methods of Anal Canal Ventilation

Massage ventilation and enema ventilation are two methods of anal canal ventilation. Massage ventilation involves the patient lying flat or adopting a comfortable position, while the masseur warms their hands and gently begins at the patient's upper abdomen, pressing continuously in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. While pressing, the patient is instructed to take deep breaths, which promotes the continuous movement of gas in the intestine, allowing it to gradually exit through the anal canal. The main step of ventilation is to apply a lubricant to the anal canal and then slowly insert the tube into the rectum through the anus. Due to the local lubricant, it can promote the excretion of feces and secretions from the rectum, thereby expelling the gas from the anal canal. This method is suitable for patients with rectal obstruction at a lower level, but not for those with high-level obstruction.
