Why Is There a Red, Swollen, and Painful Lump Growing on My Buttocks?

A fleshy bump appearing on the buttocks, accompanied by redness, swelling, and pain, typically indicates symptoms of furuncles, keloids, or bee stings. Treatment usually involves antibiotics, scar removal creams, anti-allergy medications, and the like.

1. Furuncles

Furuncles are caused by bacterial infections, often resulting from small skin tears due to scratching or other reasons, which allow bacteria to invade and cause inflammation. Symptoms include the development of a coin- to egg-sized abscess on the buttocks, with one or more yellowish-white pus heads on the surface of the cyst. There is significant local pain and elevated skin temperature. Treatment may include topical application of Fucidin Cream, Metronidazole Gel, or Ichthammol Ointment. For severe pain or fever, oral antibiotics such as Minocycline Hydrochloride, Cefixime Tablets, or Levofloxacin Hydrochloride Tablets are recommended. Larger abscesses may require surgical drainage.

2. Keloids

Keloids are caused by abnormal proliferation of skin connective tissue following injury, possibly related to individual genetic predisposition. Symptoms include the emergence of a red bump similar in shape to the injury site, with a smooth and hard surface accompanied by varying degrees of itching or pain. Keloids can be treated with topical scar removal creams, such as Jicama Extract Cream, Compound Heparin Sodium Urocanic Acid Gel, or Silicone Gel.

3. Bee Stings

Bee stings, including those from bees and wasps, can cause skin irritation. Symptoms include redness and swelling at the sting site, often accompanied by blisters or red spots in the center of the swelling, along with intense itching and pain. After a bee sting, the stinger should be promptly removed using tweezers or adhesive tape. Topical treatment may include the application of Mometasone Furoate Cream, Fluticasone Propionate Cream, or Halometasone Triclosan Cream.
