Normal thickness of female endometrium is generally between 1-10mm.
The thickness of female endometrium is not fixed and is closely related to the periodic changes of the endometrium. It will thicken before menstruation, and the endometrium will shed during menstruation. Afterwards, the endometrium will start to proliferate again. Too thick or too thin endometrium may be caused by diseases.
What is the normal thickness of female endometrium? The normal thickness of female endometrium is generally 1-10mm. Due to the influence of hormones on the functional layer of the endometrium, proliferation and shedding will occur, so the thickness of the endometrium will vary in different periods. Generally, it begins to proliferate gradually after menstruation, proliferates to the thickest in the 24 hours before menstruation, and then the functional layer of the endometrium sheds along with the tissue blood, which is menstruation.
Periodic changes of endometrium:
1. Proliferative phase: The 5th to 14th day of menstrual cycle. During this period, the thickness of the endometrium increases from 0.5mm to 3-5mm. The proliferative phase is divided into early, middle, and late stages. In the early proliferative phase, i.e., the 5th to 7th day of the menstrual cycle, the endometrium is relatively thin, only 1-2mm. The middle proliferative phase is the 8th to 10th day of the menstrual cycle, with an increase in glandular hyperplasia. By the 11th to 14th day of the menstrual cycle, it has entered the late proliferative phase, and the endometrium further thickens to 3-5mm.
2. Secretory phase: The 15th to 28th day of menstrual cycle. The endometrium increases from 5mm to 10mm. This period corresponds to the luteal phase of the ovarian cycle. The secretory phase is divided into early, middle, and late secretory phases. The early secretory phase is the 15th to 19th day of the menstrual cycle, during which the endometrial glands are longer and more curved. The middle secretory phase is the 20th to 23rd day of the menstrual cycle, during which the endometrium is thicker and serrated. By the 24th to 28th day of the menstrual cycle, this period is the pre-menstrual phase, equivalent to the luteal phase regression stage. During this period, the endometrium is spongy and up to 10mm thick.
3. Menstrual phase: The 1st to 4th day of menstrual cycle. It is the period when the spongy functional layer of the endometrium disintegrates and sheds from the basal layer, which is the final result of progesterone and estrogen withdrawal.
