Is it okay to sleep on the right side during early pregnancy?

Update Date: Source: Network

During the early stages of pregnancy, sleeping on the right side is acceptable. It is not absolutely necessary to sleep on the left side, as long as you feel comfortable. However, sleeping on your back should be avoided. Sleeping on the right side is less harmful than sleeping on your back, as some doctors may still recommend pregnant women to sleep on their right side in certain medical conditions. Nevertheless, sleeping on the right side can increase the degree of uterine rotation to the right and potentially affect the blood supply to the fetus, leading to chronic ischemia and hypoxia. Therefore, pregnant women should minimize sleeping on their right side.

During the late stages of pregnancy, especially after 30 weeks, it is unlikely for pregnant women to sleep on their preferred right side due to the influence of the fetus' position. This is because when they habitually sleep on their right side, the fetus inside may kick them towards the left side. So, is it necessary to deliberately cultivate the habit of sleeping on the left side? Actually, the most important thing is to sleep comfortably, which means both the pregnant woman and the fetus feel comfortable. As each fetus has a different position during the late stages of pregnancy, this can lead to different levels of comfort when the pregnant woman sleeps in different positions. As the fetus grows, it will use its movements to indicate discomfort to the mother when her sleeping position affects or presses on it, prompting her to change positions.

Pregnant women should maintain correct sleeping positions and sufficient sleep time. When sleeping, they should try to use lateral positions or lie flat to avoid pressing on their abdomen. Especially in the late stages of pregnancy, it is advisable to sleep slightly on both sides without completely turning over, as this can be beneficial. Pregnant women generally sleep better around 10 pm and wake up between 6-7 am. Ensuring approximately 8 hours of sleep is ideal.
