How to Handle Eyelashes That Are Irritating Your Eyes?

Update Date: Source: Network

When eyelashes are poking into the eye, they should be removed promptly. Then, antibiotic eye drops should be used to prevent infection. It is important to avoid rubbing the eye with one's hand, as this can easily cause damage to the eye. If the condition is due to entropion trichiasis, surgical treatment may be required.

1. Trichiasis is one of the most common ophthalmological external eye diseases. It occurs when the eyelashes grow inward, mainly due to abnormal positioning of the eyelid margin, eyelid, and eyelashes, resulting in contact between the eyelashes and the eyeball, specifically the cornea and conjunctiva, causing damage. Trichiasis is most common in children and adolescents, especially infants within one year of age. However, many elderly individuals may also experience symptoms of trichiasis.

2. Most patients show pathological characteristics during childhood, such as having a congenital condition of entropion, which is when the eyelid folds inward towards the eyeball. In such cases, a minimally invasive surgical procedure may be necessary to correct the eyelid position, causing it to flip outwards slightly, thus preventing the eyelashes from poking into the eye. Eyelash poking can cause conjunctival hyperemia, focal damage to the cornea, decreased visual acuity, and in severe cases, even blindness.

3. Physical removal is an option when the number of trichiasis cases is small and they are distributed sparsely. This involves using a specialized tweezer under a slit lamp to pluck out the inverted eyelashes. Since the state of the hair follicles is generally normal in trichiasis, the newly grown eyelashes will be in a normal state.
