Deer antler can be used as a medicinal ingredient, and it can also be added to soup or wine to enhance their effects. However, deer antler is considered a tonic herb, and it is not recommended for long-term or excessive use without medical advice.
Li Shizhen, in his classic "Compendium of Materia Medica," praised deer antler for its abilities in "tonifying the kidneys, strengthening yang, promoting essence and blood, and nourishing marrow and bones." However, it is most effective when combined with sea cucumber and ginseng. There are approximately 40 species of deer worldwide, with 19 species found in China.
Deer antler can be sliced into two pieces and soaked in hot water, covered, and allowed to steep for a while before drinking. It can also be ground into powder, packaged, and soaked in water as a tea. Deer antler can also be used to make wine, often combined with other ingredients like animal horns, snakes, and goji berries for their warming and nourishing effects. Additionally, it can be used to make soup with other ingredients like chicken or turtle.
Deer antler is not suitable for individuals with a hot constitution, who may experience symptoms such as dry mouth, constipation, bitter taste, red eyes, and easy flushing. These individuals should avoid taking deer antler.
