What Are the Typical Visual Standards Expected of Children?
Children's Vision Standards and Examination Guidelines
Children's vision standards are correlated with their age, as vision varies across different developmental stages. Typically, after a child reaches two years old, their vision can be tested through vision screening methods or at an eye hospital. It's crucial to limit screen time on phones and TVs and encourage physical activities to prevent vision deterioration.
1. Children's Vision Standards
a. 4-month-old infants: Vision ranges from 0.02 to 0.05.
b. 5-6-month-old infants: Vision ranges from 0.04 to 0.08.
c. 7-8-month-old infants: Develop fixation, able to look in one direction for extended periods.
d. 1-year-old children: Can recognize organs like eyes, ears, and nose.
e. 2-3-year-old children: Vision reaches 0.5 to 0.6.
f. 3-4-year-old children: Vision reaches 0.7 to 0.8.
g. 5-6-year-old children: Normal vision is close to 1.0, which is considered standard normal vision. By age 20, the eyeball is fully developed, and vision can reach 1.0 to 1.5.
2. Timing of Children's Vision Examinations
Stage 1: Objective Observation Method (up to 2 years old)
- 1 month: Afraid of light.
- 2 months: Eyes follow movements of adults.
- 4 months: Reaches for and looks at colored objects.
- 6 months: Grabs nearby objects.
- 8 months: Eyes follow finger movements accurately.
- 1 year: Points accurately to the nose.
- 2 years: Avoids obstacles while walking.
Additionally, 4-7-month-old babies with vision issues often crawl and play with toys more slowly and less accurately than peers.
Stage 2: Hand and Animal Shape Vision Chart (3-5 years old)
Patience is key in teaching children to recognize the vision chart at home beforehand for accurate results.
Stage 3: Adult Vision Chart (5 years and above)
Children over 5 can use an adult vision chart for examination, provided they cooperate well. Normal vision ranges for Chinese children by age are: 2 years: 0.4-0.5, 3 years: 0.5-0.6, 4 years: 0.7-0.8, 5 years: 0.8-1.0, 6 years: 1.0 or better.
