If the eye is swollen due to impact, it can be quickly reduced by cold compress, hot compress, and medication.

1. Cold Compress

Within 24 hours of the eye being swollen due to impact, cold compress should be applied. Cold compress can shrink the local microvascular, reduce exudation, thus preventing the swelling from getting worse and relieving the pain. It is important to note that if there is skin damage in the area, cold compress should not be applied to prevent secondary infection. Secondly, the eye tissue is delicate, so protective measures should be taken during cold compress to avoid frostbite due to low temperature. Generally, a clean gauze wrapped around an ice pack or dipped in cold water can be used for cold compress, and it can be applied continuously for 20 minutes each time.

2. Hot Compress

After 24 hours of the eye being swollen due to impact, regular hot compress can promote blood circulation and accelerate the dissipation of swelling. When applying hot compress, soak a clean towel in hot water, wring it out, and apply it to the affected area. It is recommended to change the towel every 3 minutes to maintain its temperature, and the hot compress can be applied continuously for 20 minutes. It is advisable to apply hot compress several times a day.

3. Medication

If the swelling is severe, after 24 hours of the injury, traditional Chinese medicine with the effect of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis can be prescribed by a doctor. During medication, the affected area can also be gently massaged, which has a similar effect to hot compress. Generally, massage in a circular motion is sufficient, but it is important to control the force. The speed of recovery depends on the degree of swelling. If it is only mild swelling, it will improve in about 3 days. However, if the swelling is severe, it may take about a week for the swelling to completely dissipate. Additionally, a light diet should be maintained recently, avoiding cold, raw, spicy foods, smoking, and drinking, as they may affect the recovery speed.
