Leukemia Classification and Treatment

Leukemia is categorized into acute leukemia and chronic leukemia. Acute leukemia further divides into seven subtypes: M0, M1, M2, M4, M5, M6, and M7, while chronic leukemia encompasses CML and ALL, among others.

Acute Leukemia

1. M0: Also known as undifferentiated myeloid sarcoma, this type of leukemia exhibits low malignancy and favorable prognosis, hence less prone to recurrence.

2. M1-7: Representing acute myeloid leukemia, with M3 being a special subtype known as acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). This subtype responds well to treatment, boasts a high cure rate, and has a low recurrence rate.

3. CML: Chronic myeloid leukemia, due to the availability of the targeted drug imatinib, also experiences reduced recurrence.

Chronic Leukemia

For patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), if the condition is mild, aggressive chemotherapy or radiotherapy can lead to clinical remission, generally without recurrence. However, in severe cases, recurrence may occur. The risk of recurrence varies among different types of leukemia and cannot be solely judged by the degree of risk. It is advised that upon diagnosis, patients should actively cooperate with doctors in targeted treatment to avoid disease progression. Additionally, maintaining a nutritious diet rich in high-protein foods such as eggs and milk can enhance overall resistance.
