Why Is My Menstrual Blood Brown?
Menstruation is commonly known as menstrual period. Brown menstrual blood may be caused by qi stagnation and blood stasis, vaginal inflammation, contraceptive pills, or uterine coldness. Here are the possible reasons:
1. Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis
When menstrual blood is brown, light in quality and yellow in color, or dark like a leaky roof, it may be due to qi deficiency, coldness, or heat according to Traditional Chinese Medicine.
2. Vaginal Inflammation
Brown menstrual blood may result from prolonged accumulation in the uterus. If it is accompanied by an unpleasant odor, it usually indicates vaginal inflammation. It is advisable to consult a doctor for differential diagnosis and treatment.
3. Contraceptive Pills
Taking contraceptive pills may also lead to changes in menstrual blood color, manifesting as brown menstrual blood. It is recommended to avoid excessive use of such medications.
4. Uterine Coldness
If accompanied by cold hands and feet and a pale complexion, it may be a sign of uterine coldness. Traditional Chinese medicine is suitable for treating this condition by replenishing qi and nourishing blood, warming the meridians, and clearing away pathogenic cold and dampness. During menstruation, women should keep themselves warm, drink plenty of warm water, and maintain a light diet with nutritious foods to avoid dizziness caused by body weakness. If menstrual irregularities persist, it is advisable to consult an experienced Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner for treatment.
