Generally, it is recommended to leave the cups on for 15 to 20 minutes before removing them. When removing the cups, it's important not to pull them off forcibly or twist them. The correct technique involves tilting the cup to one side while pressing the skin on the other side to allow air to enter through the gap, which will naturally detach the cup from the skin.

Precautions for Air Cupping

  1. Choose the appropriate area or acupoint for cupping. Muscle-rich, well-padded areas with minimal hair are generally preferred.
  2. Maintain a warm indoor environment during the procedure, especially for patients who need to expose their skin. Avoid drafts to prevent cold exposure.
  3. Advise patients to remain still during cupping to prevent the cups from falling off. If multiple cups are used, ensure that they are not placed too close together to avoid discomfort or skin irritation due to pulling or pinching.
  4. Avoid cupping on the same area until any previous marks have faded.
  5. Adjust the duration of cupping based on the severity of the condition and the location. For deeper or more painful conditions, longer sessions may be beneficial. For lighter or more superficial conditions, shorter sessions are recommended. The duration should also be adjusted based on the muscle thickness of the area.
  6. During colder weather, cupping sessions may be extended slightly, while shorter sessions may be suitable during warmer weather.
  7. If the skin becomes red or itchy after cupping, avoid scratching and apply a moisturizing lotion or cream to alleviate discomfort.
  8. Closely monitor the patient's condition and distinguish between normal and abnormal reactions. If any discomfort, pain, or severe discomfort is experienced, adjust the suction by releasing some air from the cups or remove them and reapply.
  9. For individuals who are overly fatigued, hungry, thirsty, intoxicated, or have a high sensitivity to pain, it's recommended to postpone cupping until they have rested, eaten, hydrated, or recovered from intoxication. Lighter techniques should be used for those with a high sensitivity to pain.
