What are the most common adverse effects of Metronidazole?

Update Date: Source: Network

The most common adverse reactions of metronidazole are nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal cramps and other gastrointestinal reactions, which generally do not affect treatment. Neurological symptoms include headache, dizziness, occasionally abnormal sensation, numbness of limbs, ataxia, multiple neuritis, etc. Large doses can cause convulsions. A few cases have occurred with urticaria, flushing, itching, cystitis, difficulty urinating, metal taste in the mouth, and leukopenia, all of which are reversible and recover spontaneously after discontinuation of the drug.

Metronidazole is mainly used to treat or prevent systemic or local infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, such as anaerobic bacterial infections in the abdominal cavity, digestive tract, female reproductive system, lower respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue, bones and joints, etc. It is also effective for sepsis, endocarditis, meningitis, and colitis caused by antibiotics. Metronidazole is often used in combination with tetanus antitoxin (TAT) for the treatment of tetanus. It can also be used for oral anaerobic bacterial infections.
