"What Should I Do if My Toenails Are Thick?"
Thick toenails can be treated with antifungal drugs. Thick toenails are generally caused by fungal infections, which are contagious. Regular toenail trimming is needed. For severe cases, surgical removal of the toenail is required at a hospital. Daily attention should be paid to cleaning the feet, wearing pure cotton socks, avoiding frequent application of nail polish, and protecting the toenails to prevent damage.
1. External Therapy: External therapy mainly includes soaking the feet, local application of medication, and wrapping and shaving methods. It is safe, painless, and has no side effects. The entire foot and hands are soaked (usually the entire nail plate needs to be soaked) to achieve strong penetration of the medication into the deep part of the nail plate and the skin stratum corneum, thoroughly killing all fungi parasitic in the nail plate and the surrounding skin stratum corneum. This ensures that the toenail receives comprehensive treatment and is cured, eliminating the possibility of recurrence.
2. Surgical Toenail Removal: For severe cases, surgical toenail removal is required. Under local anesthesia, the affected toenail is removed. This method has a large wound area, bleeding, and is prone to infection. After surgery, patients usually experience pain. Since it only treats the symptoms and not the root cause, it is generally not ideal and prone to reinfection and recurrence. Moreover, patients with heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, etc., are not suitable for surgical treatment.
