What is the Optimal Time for a Medical Abortion?
Medical abortion is best performed within 35-49 days. If the pregnancy duration is less than 35 days, the fertilized egg has not implanted in the uterus, which does not meet the criteria for medical abortion. If it is more than 49 days, the gestational tissue is larger, and it is prone to abortion failure and incomplete abortion. In the later stage, uterine cleaning is required, which can cause significant damage to women's bodies. Therefore, if you want to undergo medical abortion, it is recommended to go to the hospital for a B-ultrasound within 35-49 days after menopause to confirm intrauterine pregnancy. Then, under the guidance of a doctor, orally take mifepristone and misoprostol tablets for medical abortion.
Generally, within the 49th day after menopause, when the gestational sac is detected, the doctor can perform medical abortion. Generally, the gestational sac can be detected by B-ultrasound around 35 days after menopause. Medical abortion can only be performed when the gestational sac is less than 2.0cm or no more than 2.3cm in diameter on B-ultrasound. If it is larger than 2.3cm, then medical abortion is not recommended due to its high failure rate.
Before medical abortion:
- A B-ultrasound examination must be performed before medical abortion to exclude the possibility of ectopic pregnancy and to understand the size and location of the embryo sac.
- Medical abortion should only be performed on pregnant women within 49 days of menopause and under the age of 40.
- Individuals who have or are currently suffering from severe systemic diseases, liver and kidney dysfunction, allergies, heart disease, hypertension, anemia, asthma, glaucoma, skin itching during pregnancy, etc., are not suitable for medical abortion.
- Medical abortion should be performed at a formal hospital and should not be attempted at home.
- Medication for medical abortion should be taken according to the doctor's instructions on dosage and timing. Strict compliance with the doctor's advice for follow-up visits is required after medication.
After medical abortion:
- Remain at the hospital for observation for 1 hour after the expulsion of tissue. If vaginal bleeding is not excessive, you may return home for rest.
- Take appropriate rest for 2 weeks after abortion, eat nutritious food, and avoid heavy physical labor.
- Maintain perineal cleanliness, avoid bathing and sexual intercourse when vaginal bleeding is present, refrain from vaginal douches, and swimming.
