The Pros and Cons of Using a Pacifier: What Should Parents Know?
Advantages and Disadvantages of Using a Pacifier for Babies
After a baby turns one year old, breastfeeding should be gradually discontinued, as the nutritional content of breast milk can no longer meet the baby's growing needs. However, some mothers may find that their babies often cry when trying to wean them from breastfeeding. To avoid this situation, many parents choose to use pacifiers. Although pacifiers can effectively soothe a baby's emotions, there are also some drawbacks that parents should be aware of.
Advantages of Using a Pacifier
Pacifiers can indeed play a soothing role for babies, especially when they are fussy and crying due to wanting to sleep. Simply placing a pacifier in the baby's mouth can help them calm down and fall asleep, making it a highly useful tool for caregivers. Proponents of pacifiers argue that they are easy to clean, can satisfy a baby's oral desires, increase their sense of security, and some scholars even believe that pacifiers can reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Disadvantages of Using a Pacifier
Despite their usefulness, pacifiers are not without their critics. One main concern is the duration of use; pacifiers should not be used excessively or frequently. Sucking is a physiological need for babies, but it is strongest only during the first six months. While pacifiers can be relied upon during this period, it is not advisable to allow babies to continue to depend on them after this time. Prolonged use of pacifiers can have negative impacts on babies, including increased risk of oral candida infections, tooth decay, malocclusion, and a higher incidence of ear infections.
How to Use a Pacifier Correctly
Pacifiers are not necessary for every baby, but some babies may need them as a transitional tool. When using a pacifier, it is important to follow these guidelines: Do not use a pacifier as a shortcut or out of convenience; choose a style that is suitable for your baby; clean the pacifier thoroughly before and after use; remove the pacifier when the baby falls asleep; do not tie the pacifier around the baby's neck; and avoid prolonged use.
