Can expired flower water still be used?
Expired floral water is not recommended for continued use. The shelf life of floral water is generally three years. If it has been opened and used, it is best to use it up within 6 months. After the floral water expires, the medicinal ingredients and alcohol inside will change. The effect of mosquito repellent will also be poorer, and the effects of swelling reduction, pain relief, and itch relief will be greatly discounted. If used improperly, it may cause skin allergies such as itching, redness, and urticaria. Because the main ingredient of floral water is fragrance, it is very easy to deteriorate over time. Therefore, it is not recommended to continue using expired floral water.
Floral water is a summer hygiene product used to remove sweat odor after bathing and eliminate odors in public places. In addition, floral water has a certain disinfection and sterilization effect. It can be applied to mosquito bites and insect bites to relieve itching and swelling. When applied to the skin with heat rash, it can also relieve itching and provide a cool and comfortable feeling. The fragrance of floral water should be easy to disperse and have a certain ability to retain fragrance for a long time. Floral water is mainly composed of ethanol, fragrance, and distilled water, supplemented with a small amount of chelating agent, antioxidant, and light-resistant water-soluble pigment. The color is preferably light blue, green, or yellow.
The dosage of fragrance in floral water generally ranges from 2% to 5%, and the alcohol concentration is between 70% and 75%. Traditionally, the fragrance is mainly based on fragrant lavender oil. Some products use oriental perfume fragrances (such as rose musk) to enhance the fragrance retention ability, which is called floral perfume water.
