What complications can arise from nasal polyps in the sphenoid sinus?
1. Chronic sinusitis often occurs due to the obstruction of sinus ostia by nasal polyps. Some polyps originate from the ethmoid sinus and maxillary sinus. Nasal polyps often coexist with sinus cysts or are found in odontogenic maxillary sinusitis.
2. It often exists in certain syndromes, such as Kartagener's syndrome (immotile cilia syndrome) with bronchiectasis, chronic sinusitis, and visceral malpositions; Young's syndrome with sinopulmonary disease, spermatogenesis disorder, and nasal polyps. Cystic fibrosis is common in children. Nasal polyps in patients with Kartagener's syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and sexually transmitted diseases are mainly composed of neutrophils rather than eosinophils.
3. Most notably, there is the Aspirin triad or Aspirin-induced asthma syndrome, clinically manifested as Aspirin sensitivity or intolerance, endogenous bronchial asthma, and allergic rhinitis. Approximately one-third of patients with this syndrome have nasal polyps.
4. The relationship between nasal polyps and systemic diseases has received attention. Why nasal polyp patients are prone to Aspirin-induced asthma remains an incompletely resolved topic.
