How to Treat Prostatitis?

Update Date: Source: Network

Methods for treating prostatitis include antibacterial therapy, anti-inflammatory therapy, and physical therapy.

Prostatitis is divided into bacterial and non-bacterial types. Before treatment, a complete examination needs to be performed to determine the type of prostatitis, and then targeted treatment can be conducted. For more severe cases, surgical methods may be considered. At the same time, good living habits should be developed to better control the condition.

1. Antibacterial Therapy

The choice of antibacterial drugs is based on the identification of pathogenic pathogens through the culture of prostatic fluid. Non-bacterial prostatitis patients with signs of bacterial infection who do not respond to general therapy may also receive appropriate antibacterial therapy. In selecting antibacterial drugs, it should be noted that there is a prostate-blood barrier composed of lipid membranes between the prostatic acini and microcirculation, which hinders the passage of water-soluble antibiotics, greatly reducing the therapeutic effect.

2. Anti-inflammatory and Analgesic Drugs

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can improve symptoms, usually using indomethacin internally or suppositories. Traditional Chinese medicine using anti-inflammatory, heat-clearing, detoxifying, and softening drugs can also achieve certain effects. Allopurinol can lower the uric acid concentration in the whole body and prostatic fluid, theoretically acting as a free radical scavenger and scavenging reactive oxygen species to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. It can be considered as an optional adjuvant therapy.

3. Physical Therapy

Prostatic massage can empty the concentrated secretions in the prostatic ducts and drain the infection sites in the obstructed glandular area. Therefore, for stubborn cases, prostatic massage can be performed every 3 to 7 days while using antibiotics. Multiple physical factors are used for prostatic physical therapy, such as microwave, radiofrequency, ultrashort wave, medium wave, and hot water baths. These have certain benefits in relaxing the prostate, posterior urethral smooth muscle, and pelvic floor muscles, enhancing antibacterial efficacy, and relieving pain symptoms.
