Can I eat and drink before a pregnancy ultrasound?
Undergoing a B-scan ultrasound is the same as undergoing an ultrasound examination. If the ultrasound examination is for obstetrics during pregnancy, it is not necessary to fast. Normal eating and drinking will not affect the results of the examination. However, if the ultrasound examination is for the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, then fasting is required. Specific recommendations can be followed as per doctor's advice.
1. No Need for Fasting: In early pregnancy, the uterus has not significantly enlarged, and normal eating does not affect the results of the ultrasound examination. The first ultrasound examination is usually conducted between 45 and 70 days after the last menstrual period, and its main purpose is to determine if the pregnancy is normal within the uterus. There are two methods for this ultrasound examination. One is transabdominal pelvic ultrasound, which requires a full bladder as the examination will be clearer when the bladder is full. The second method is transvaginal ultrasound, which requires an empty bladder before the examination. When it comes to four-dimensional ultrasound, the fetal position needs to be correct. Pregnant women can eat something or drink water before the examination to stimulate fetal movement, which facilitates a smoother examination.
2. Need for Fasting: If a pregnant woman has liver and gallbladder diseases and needs an ultrasound examination of the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, she should fast in the morning. She should not eat or drink anything after 12 midnight on the night before the examination to avoid affecting the results.
