How to Treat Infant Abdominal Bloating?

Update Date: Source: Network

Infant abdominal distension is commonly caused by factors such as exposure to cold, poor diet, or improper holding posture during breastfeeding, which may lead to excessive air intake during sucking and cause abdominal distension. Gastrointestinal issues can also contribute to this condition, and it can be alleviated through helping the baby burp, abdominal massage, and medication.

Here are some methods:

1. Helping Baby Burp

Try to pause the feeding process, such as when the baby has eaten half of the meal, and pat their back gently to help them burp. Place the baby upright on your lap and pat their back until they burp. Avoid feeding the baby when they are excessively hungry, as this may cause them to suck too hurriedly and swallow a large amount of air. Feed the baby regularly and gently pat their back after feeding to promote burping and allow gas to escape through the esophagus.

2. Abdominal Massage for Baby

When a baby is crying due to discomfort from abdominal distension, the mother can try placing the baby flat on their back, reaching into their clothing, and gently massaging their abdomen in a clockwise direction. This can help relieve bloating and distract the baby's attention. To perform this massage, start one hour after a meal, centering on the baby's navel and using a clockwise circular motion with the palm of your hand. Repeat several times daily, ensuring that the technique is gentle to promote gastrointestinal motility and gas expulsion, improving digestion and absorption. Keep the baby's navel warm during the massage.

3. Medication

Babies may experience abdominal distension and pain due to their immature gastrointestinal system and weak digestive capabilities. Medications such as Bacillus subtilis live bacteria granules or Bifidobacterium triple viable bacteria capsules can be prescribed by a doctor to regulate the baby's gastrointestinal system and aid in digestion. However, if the baby's abdominal distension is severe, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly to rule out other underlying causes.
